Our newest rescue, Picasso, came to us in August with multitude of issues. After examined by our vet, he was diagnosed with founder, also known as laminitis, which is the destruction of the sensitive laminae that connect the horse's hoof to the soft tissue of the foot. It’s a very painful condition, as horses stand up to 23 hours a day. Founder is similar to Type 2 diabetes in humans.
Picasso also has Cushings Disease, a dysfunction of the pituitary gland most common in older horses. Cushing’s often compromises the immune system, so Picasso will be more prone to infections and other health problems and will need to be seen by the vet more often than our other horses. We are treating Picasso with a special medication, which he will have to take for the remainder of his life. Each pill costs $3, taken once a day, for a cost of around $90/month.
Won’t you help us fulfill our mission of Caring for Horses Mind, Body & Soul by making a donation toward the cost of Picasso’s medication? Your support will directly impact this beautiful creature’s health and well-being.
